File Permissions

  • Control access: File permissions determine who can do what with a file. Typical permissions include:
    • Read: Users can open and view the file’s contents.
    • Write: Users can change the file’s content.
    • Execute: Users can run the file (if it’s a program or script).
  • Owners, Groups, and Others: Permissions can often be set differently for the file’s owner, a specific group of users, and everyone else.

Example: Imagine a Word document where the owner has full read, write, and execute permissions. However, a group like “Editors” may only have read and write access, while others might only have read-only access.

“Unlocked” PDF Forms

  • Restrictions: PDF forms often come with restrictions to prevent accidental changes to the form structure itself. For instance, a form might only allow filling in specific fields, but not changing the field names or adding new ones.
